CRUISE TIP #2 – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MSC
BEFORE YOU CRUISE

CRUISE TIPS & ESSENTIALS - What to know about MSC Cruises before you cruise.

Cruising with MSC Cruises offers the passenger a unique and enjoyable experience, different from many mainstream cruise lines. For those new to MSC, it’s essential to understand what sets this Italian cruise line apart from other lines. Here, we share key insights to help you prepare for your first MSC cruise, ensuring you know what to expect and can make the most of your vacation. At the end of the day, it is only you yourself who can make any holiday a happy one!

  1. Dining Experience

MSC Cruises offers a distinctive dining experience compared to lines like Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, or Carnival. You can dine at the buffet, main dining room, or specialty restaurants noting that these come at an extra cost. The buffet, a primary dining spot throughout the day, offers a mix of American, European, and Italian dishes, fresh fruit, and healthy options, including a kids-only section with lower counters and child-friendly choices. MSC is renowned for its delicious pizza, which is a must-try onboard.

  1. Safety Drill

MSC now conducts its safety drill differently. Instead of the typical e-muster drill, you must now watch a safety video on your stateroom TV, call a specific number to confirm that you have watched it, and check in at your muster station to have your cruise card scanned. This process ensures safety but requires a few extra steps. We advise you to do this as per the announcements over the intercom because failure to comply with this maritime law in this regard will most certainly get you into a tizz and the embarrassment of constantly being called to go to reception and do it the old-fashioned way.

  1. Elevator System

MSC’s elevators use a modern system where you select your destination floor on a screen outside the elevator, which then assigns you an elevator. This system might take some getting used to but is efficient during quieter times. (not on the older ships)

  1. Themed Parties

Pack a white outfit for the lively white party, a highlight of MSC cruises. These themed parties, including tropical and glow parties, create a festive atmosphere and are a fun way to engage with fellow passengers. These parties are not available on short cruises and in certain countries. Make sure you read your daily program and plan your time accordingly.

  1. Multilingual Environment

Expect to hear multiple languages onboard as MSC attracts a diverse, international clientele. While English is widely spoken by the crew, you’ll encounter passengers speaking various languages, adding to the multicultural experience.

  1. Status Match Program

MSC’s Status Match program allows you to transfer your loyalty status from other cruise lines to the MSC Voyagers Club, offering benefits like discounts on future cruises, onboard savings, and complimentary gifts.

  1. Hot Tubs

MSC’s hot tubs are typically lukewarm rather than hot. If you prefer a traditional hot tub experience, be aware that you might find the temperature cooler than expected unless you visit the spa. Our tip is to get there early in the morning with a cup of coffee and enjoy them.
We usually go to the Jacuzzi at 06h00 or whichever time it opens as timings are ship-specific.

  1. Private Island – Ocean Cay

MSC’s private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, is a Caribbean paradise offering free beach access, including dining, and Wi-Fi. Enjoy eight different beach areas, bars, a lighthouse, and a barbecue buffet lunch.

  1. MSC For Me Wristband

The MSC For Me wristband, available for purchase or complimentary for certain cabin classes, allows you to access your room and pay for drinks without your cruise card. However, you still need your card to disembark at ports.

  1. Coffee at Bars

Unlike other cruise lines, MSC serves specialty coffee and espresso at all bars, making it easy to get your caffeine fix without waiting in long lines.

  1. Extra Charges for Certain Activities

Some activities, like the Robotron and Formula 1 Racing Simulator, have an additional charge. However, many activities, such as water slides and kids’ clubs, are included in the cruise fare. (subject to availability and not on older ships)

  1. European Cruises

On European sailings, expect fewer American passengers and more Europeans. Announcements may be in multiple languages, and entertainment often relies on music and visuals to cater to a diverse audience.

  1. Booking Options

MSC offers three different booking packages: Bella (introductory), Fantastica (mid-tier with added perks), and Aurea (including spa access and more). Choose the package that best fits your budget and preferences. These are explained in much more detail when you book through Cruising South Africa.

  1. MSC Yacht Club

For a premium experience, consider the MSC Yacht Club, which offers private dining, exclusive sun deck access, 24-hour butler service, priority check-in, and more. It’s a luxurious option that many cruisers rave about.

  1. Exceptional Pizza

MSC, being an Italian cruise line, is famous for its pizza, which is a highlight for many passengers. Freshly made and delicious, it’s a must-try during your cruise.

Final Thoughts

MSC Cruises offers a unique blend of international flair, diverse dining, and exciting activities. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveller, an MSC cruise can be a delightful and enriching experience. With competitive pricing and a wide range of offerings, MSC is worth trying—you might just fall in love with this distinctive cruise line. E&OE
